WAHAG STUDIO's submission for the international ideas competition to establish a design for the Busan Opera House for construction beginning in 2014, is a harmonic gesture unifying the interactions between people, culture and nature. The opera house will include a variety of facilities that will foster a wide range of artistic activities all the while being accessible to the city's citizens and suitable to establishing Busan's status as an international city.
This new cultural center for Busan, South Korea will feature an oscillating roof line consisting of three 'peaks', the opera house, multipurpose hall, cafe & library zone, connected by a form that references the surrounding mountain landscape.
Drawing from the concept of three dancing birds, the building forms a ring around an outdoor plaza that provides and open and public domain for socializing and idea exchange. The heights of the peaks are determined by the principal program housed within. The interior circulation is provided by ramps, establishing a naturally flowing route throughout the complex. The main entrance is on axis with a pedestrian bridge aligned with the center of the project inside the plaza.
Situated on the sea front of Busan, the curved form aims to establish a visually-arresting identity on the site. The skin of the exterior changes hues and colors to amplify the curvature of the architecture while maintaing a dynamic aesthetic with the sea as it backdrop.
